THEMES
"Living in a life of fear is exhausting as we are consistently worrying about others".
The directors intentions in developing this theme is to help us realize the relationships in our lives and to give others a chance so we can trust them as people.
CAMERA ANGLES
-The directors use of different camera angles helps us realize the theme in the movie. The camera is usually above Marlin (dad) showing that he is smaller than the others in the sea. It starts to show that he can be scared and fearful a lot of the time, encouraging him to trust others easily. This is also like how bullies treat the weaker opponent soposedly Marlin being the weaker opponent. As the movie goes on he overcomes this "Bully" and realises that you can do anything if you set your mind to it.
SOUND EFFECTS
- The sound effects in the movie can sometimes depend on what the father feels towards what is happening at that moment. This shows us when Marlin is fearful or relieved and it can help us understand what he is going through. This is like, when you listen to bad and depressing music it usually makes you sad and you can tell when anyone is sad because they'll have their head down and probably won't talk to you meaning the sad and depressing music is on.
LIGHTING
- The lighting in the movie varies from light, dark or in between and it can show us the difference in how Marlin feels.
eg. when Marlin was getting chased by the shark it was dark lighting and this showed us he was fearful and felt unsafe. In the real world this is like when there is a dark alley way or something scary you don't go there and it makes you feel scared or maybe nervous to be there instead of if you were at the beach and the sun was shining, you don't worry because you know you'll be safe because it's a light area.
COLOR
- The color helped us differentiate the times Marlin was worried sick or when he felt safe. When he was scared or unhappy, (which was the majority of the movie) he was a darker orange and when he was happy or relieved he seemed to be a brighter color. This is like when you're happy in life. When you see someone happy you can see there brightness to them and will never see a dark color when someones smiling. However if they were sad you can tell they've got the dark sort of colors rushing through them.
SET DESIGN
- The set design in Finding Nemo helps us realize the situation of Marlin as the surroundings of him can be different. If he is in a dangerous area we can tell that he will be cautious and he will also be scared because of his characteristics and his past memories. This is like before, if you were in a dark alley way you would be very careful walking down there but if you were walking to school and there wasn't a cloud in the sky you would feel very safe and walk joyfully.
COSTUME
-Costume helps us recognize the different characters, even though it was a cartoon it showed that the brighter the fish were, the happier the fish were. If the fish are dark and are quite a blunt color, it sometimes proves that he can be unkind or dangerous, But the color of the fish can change into a darker or lighter color depending on how they are feeling at that time. e.g when Nemo experiences his first time in a fish tank he is a darker color and not so bright telling us he is very scared and unsure of where he is and his surroundings. This can help us recognize how Marlin is feeling, if he is worried or happy. This is like how people dress in the real world usually when they're angry or sad, people tend to wear a darker color saying don't mess with me but when you wear brighter colors you can tell that they are feeling (most of the time) quite happy and care-free.
